Molloy College Nursing Center Gets a Healthy Dose of Clockaudio Technologies

Molloy College, a private liberal arts college on Long Island, New York, funded several new construction initiatives to meet rising enrollment demand. One of the most recently finished projects is the Barbara H. Hagan Center for Nursing, a new state-of-the-art academic building on Molloy’s Rockville Centre campus.

The sustainably designed building provides consolidated space for the school’s nursing division, including specially designed nursing laboratories, a telepresence room, a computer laboratory, simulation rooms, and a healing garden. Advance Sound Company was brought onto the core team to spearhead the audio-visual technology design, with Clockaudio microphones specified as key to the Nursing Center’s classrooms.

THE CHALLENGE

Clear Communication for a High-Tech Nursing Center

Learning happens when there is a clear ability for the professor and students to communicate. Within the classroom, the speaker’s voice needed to be clearly picked up and distributed evenly throughout the classroom so that everyone could hear and participate in question-and-answer segments. The technology also needed to support a way to channel multiple responses so that students were not talking over each other.

THE SOLUTION

Through-Desk Boundary Microphones with Touch-Switch Queuing

Advance Sound Company, a Long Island based AV integration firm, specified Clockaudio’s C012E-RF through-table cardioid boundary layer microphone, fixed and mounted into every desk surface in the tiered basement classrooms. Each C012E-RF is paired with a CH32 touch switch and status indication ring at its base, letting professors and students instantly identify who is speaking.

Working in tandem with a Crestron DM Matrix control system, the microphone and touch switch let students enter and remain in a queue while waiting their turn to speak. When a student presses the CH32 status button, the audio processor identifies them as “first in,” the base light turns green to signal “on,” and a camera in the room is cued to focus on the speaker. Other students who have opted in show a red “on but waiting” status. For the center’s multi-function spaces with no fixed layout, Clockaudio C007 ceiling microphones were also specified so coverage could move with the space.
