Technical University of Munich Medical Training Center

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a school dedicated to providing its students with experience in research and hands-on training to prepare them for careers in healthcare. Founded in 1868 in the heart of Munich, Germany, TUM was among the first universities in Germany to receive the title “university of excellence” and ranks highly among the best educational establishments in Europe.

TUM’s medical training facility offers students the opportunity to practice and receive real-time feedback from their professors, using simulation mannequins capable of breathing, having a pulse, and having their blood pressure taken. Clockaudio partnered with REACH and distribution partner Prodytel to bring these mannequins to life with clear, reliable audio across multiple simultaneous training rooms.

THE CHALLENGE

Bringing Simulation Mannequins to Life With Reliable Audio

The Technical University of Munich (TUM), founded in 1868 and among the first universities in Germany to receive the title “university of excellence,” operates a large medical training facility containing multiple simulation, debriefing, and control rooms. The simulation rooms contain mannequins capable of breathing, having a pulse, and having their blood pressure taken, and they need the ability to speak to students during simulations through a microphone connected to the teacher. Training sessions also needed to be recorded so students could analyze and discuss their sessions afterward — and TUM needed the capability to perform all of this simultaneously across multiple training rooms with flexibility and ease.

  • Give mannequins in simulation rooms a convincing simulated voice, spoken live by the teacher
  • Record and monitor training sessions for later student review and discussion
  • Support multiple simulation, debriefing, and control rooms operating simultaneously
  • Deliver high, consistent audio quality across every training room in the facility
THE SOLUTION

Omnidirectional Boundary Microphones Across Every Training Room

Clockaudio partnered with REACH, which delivered the server-based hardware at the heart of the system. This hardware allows 15 live video signals to process through 8 cameras at one time, enabling the university to monitor multiple training sessions concurrently.

Clockaudio supplied C 005E interface microphones and headsets, allowing teachers to engage in hands-on demonstration while ensuring high-quality audio for playback and recording. Biamp equipped and installed the audio matrix used to transfer audio from one room to another, and Community speakers were installed in every room to ensure the highest quality audio playback throughout the facility.

  • (1) REACH CM800 MRS Powolive server for centralised session monitoring
  • (4) Clockaudio C 005E interface microphones for teacher-to-mannequin audio
  • (3) Biamp AudiaFLEX CM digital audio platforms and (2) Biamp NPS-1 call & communication stations forming the audio matrix
  • (14) Community DS-5 monitor speakers distributed across the training facility

A Coordinated Effort

The success of this project was the result of seamless collaboration between specialized partners, each contributing unique expertise to deliver an exceptional outcome.

Manufacturer

Clockaudio

Clockaudio supplied the C 005E interface microphones and headsets central to the training facility’s audio design, described by the distribution partner as “the perfect solution for monitoring and recording in these simulation rooms.”

Distribution Partner

Prodytel

Jan Otte, Prodytel

Prodytel served as the distribution partner for the project. Jan Otte of Prodytel said of Clockaudio’s involvement: “For this project, good audio-quality was most important. We are very happy with Clockaudio’s omnidirectional boundary microphones as they are the perfect solution for monitoring and recording in these simulation rooms.”

Hardware Partner

REACH

REACH delivered the server-based hardware — a CM800 MRS Powolive server — enabling 15 live video signals to process through 8 cameras and letting staff monitor multiple training sessions concurrently.
