Opened in January 2014, Edward P. Evans Hall is home to the Yale School of Management (SOM). This 225,000-square-foot building on the northern end of the Yale University campus employs a striking modern design, glass façade, and large courtyard, taking its place among the other architectural landmarks that distinguish the Yale campus.
Yale hired HB Communications to develop and deploy the entire AV/IT system design in close collaboration with the School of Management’s senior management team. As part of the project’s scope, HB walked Yale through a completely customized design for its classroom microphone technologies, balancing the client and architect’s aesthetic requirements for clean sight lines with the audio performance needed across 16 classrooms, an auditorium, and a lecture hall.
Opened in January 2014, Edward P. Evans Hall is home to the Yale School of Management (SOM) — a 225,000-square-foot building on the northern end of the Yale University campus featuring a striking modern design, glass façade, and large courtyard. The interior houses state-of-the-art classrooms, faculty offices, academic centers, an auditorium, library, and lecture hall/entertainment space, each demanding a well thought out AV/IT infrastructure.
Of the 16 classrooms on the project, 14 were specified with permanent seating requiring push-to-talk microphones. Both the client and architect wanted clean sight lines within the room, meaning the microphones needed to be low profile so the view between teacher and student remained clear — while each microphone still needed to cross-capture audio from the presenter, data stations, and students so it could be picked up and clearly heard.
HB Communications worked closely with Clockaudio to review the requirements and identify a solution designed specifically for the project. The final product combined a Clockaudio C310R slim line microphone — with a rigid shaft and 60-degree fixed bend radius — permanently mounted in an SM20-RF shock mount, together with the S80S through-table microphone mount featuring a bi-color LED status indicator and a pre-wired latching or push-to-talk switch. The SM20-RF and S80S were modified to flush mount, allowing both pieces to mate perfectly together as one piece. The back-end microphone programming controls were Crestron based.
In all, Clockaudio customized and supplied 540 microphones for the permanent classrooms as part of HB Communications’ integration, plus 14 podium microphones in the lecture hall featuring Clockaudio’s C33ESR-RF.
The success of this project was the result of seamless collaboration between specialized partners, each contributing unique expertise to deliver an exceptional outcome.
With a long history of working on the Yale campus, HB Communications developed and deployed the entire AV/IT system design in close collaboration with the School of Management’s senior management team, and worked with Clockaudio to develop a completely customized classroom microphone solution.
Clockaudio customized and supplied the C310R slim line microphones, SM20-RF shock mounts, S80S through-table mounts, and C33ESR-RF podium microphones used throughout Evans Hall.
Christie Digital, Stewart Filmscreen, Winoff, and Crestron rounded out the $10.5 million AV deployment, which included two video walls used as presentation surfaces, four further video walls across the building, and over 40 digital signs.
